Before diagnostic medical imaging was born, the only way to understanding what goes on inside the body and understand the disease processes is to open up the body. A big thanks to the advances in medical technology because nowadays, diagnosing diseases can be done in less invasive ways. With diagnostic imaging, the medical professionals may now study the activities and the structures inside the body without pain and with minimal risk. The most commonly used type of diagnostic imaging are in x-ray and ultrasound. X-ray is commonly used to diagnose bone and lung problems while ultrasound is often used in pregnancy and many other diagnostic purposes. More advanced diagnostic imaging such as MRIs and CT scans are also commonly used nowadays and these two career paths are booming with great job opportunities.

The field of diagnostic medical imaging is changing rapidly as new advancements continue to emerge every year. The demand for qualified diagnostic imaging professionals is expected to grow continuously because of growth in the aging population. The use diagnostic imaging has created a significant change and improvement in the treatment of various medical conditions today. The use of diagnostic imaging has opened up many possibilities in early diagnosis, treatment, and in saving lives.

Working as diagnostic imaging technicians requires medical knowledge and excellent technical skills in order to operate on such complicated equipments. With a minimum of a 2-year degree program in radiography and diagnostic medical imaging, the candidate can enter the career field. Formal education is needed to enter the diagnostic medical imaging field. Registration or certification is recommended for the graduates of the 2-year associate’s degree program. Certification and registration is voluntary but being registered and certified can give the candidate an advantage over other vying for the same position. The ultrasound technicians may voluntarily be registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The x-ray technicians on the other hand can obtain their certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Work experience is also very important for the diagnostic imaging professionals. The entry-level job opportunities are open for those who have less than one year experience.

Medical imaging technology is very important in the healthcare system today. Those imaging professionals with the knowledge and skills to perform imaging procedures are very much in demand these days. The demand for such highly trained professionals is most likely due to the increasing aging population and the advancements in medicine and technology. Not only is the job outlook in the field of diagnostic medical imaging good through 2018 but the career also provide comprehensive benefit packages to the medical imaging professionals. Of course the benefit packages including the salary will depend on the medical setting and the employment position.
